The Deaf and Freemasons, Rotary, Lions, Roundtable, etc.FreemasonsOnce upon a time I read an article in a local newspaper about the Freemasons. I noticed that in order to be admitted to this exclusive order, you must have Y chromosome in your body cells, believe in a single god, be solvent financially, and be happily married. In addition to the above, you must also be able-bodied. The article specifically mentioned the example of blind people who wouldn't be admitted. I reached the conclusion that I have three reasons to be disqualified from being Freemason:
Oh well, at least I have the Y chromosome. I wonder what happens if someone is member and later loses his hearing. Will he be expelled from the order once he is no longer successful in hiding this condition? LionsThe Lions Club is exceptional in that it has had "Deaf Lions" chapters. There is a story about one deaf man who became very involved, rising in the Lions hierarchy at the same time. Other organizationsAt present, I have no information about the attitude toward deaf persons of other organizations, such as Rotary and Roundtable. Last update date: 2005 Dec 1 |
